Summary: Cloud Computing have transformed many of the processes that we have in the current era. It is bringing information and communication online through new technology. While many have benefited from the cloud computing, many others are losing out in the usage of cloud computing due to the lack of internet coverage. Cloud computing is part of the historical trend which have transformed the way which I study and work.
Cloud computing is an Internet resource delivery model that integrates storage data, servers, databases, networks, and software, and provides these in the form of services through the Internet. Cloud-based storage can make remote files storage possible and retrieve them at any time (Kuo, 2011). Cloud computing is a growing market. According to a Forbes study, cloud computing is expected to grow from $67 in 2015 to $162B in 2020, with a compound annual growth rate of 19% (Columbus, 2017). As new enterprises use cloud computing extensively, which has become the mainstream in personal life and business. For example, the storage of our daily emails to phone numbers is attributed to cloud computing services. This essay will work on the importance of cloud computing and the motive behind the innovation. Also bringing in the benefits and discussing those who have not received them and finally applying the case of cloud computing to my daily life.
How is it Changing History
Cloud computing is based on application software infrastructure that can rely on remote servers for data storage and can be accessed via the Internet. It can be respectively divided into front end and back end. The front end stores data based on the access of the users to the Internet browser or software. But the role of the back end is mainly responsible for secure storage and it is also an important component of cloud computing. It is also composed of servers, computers, databases and central servers. As for the central server complies with a series of rules known as protocols to facilitate the operation which uses software or middleware to ensure seamless connection between cloud computing connected devices or computers. The term cloud computing has been widely used in the past few years. With the increase in the use of data which society is gradually transitioning to the digital 21st century, it is much more difficult for individuals and organizations to save all crucial information, programs and systems on their in-house computer systems. It has become part of the historical trends in the management of information and also allowing for internetworked communication for these forms of exchange are now being done online. This technology is so transformative, it has changed the previous information management and communication, breaking the pattern of time and space.
Who has Benefited
Cloud computing have benefited organizations, business, workers and society at large. First of all, it allows business and organizations to reduce costs. 20% of organizations do concern about the initial cost of their implementation of cloud-based servers (Ang, 2020). However, those organizations that attempt to try are balancing the advantages and disadvantages of cloud computing. They need to consider not only the initial price but also the return on investment. If companies and individuals are on the cloud, users can easily access data to save time cost and money cost for project startup. With the support of cloud technology, the development of international-oriented small and medium-sized enterprises is promoted by providing more opportunities to enter the global market, reducing opportunity costs and supporting cooperation and innovation in the more connected world (Ross & Blumenstein, 2014). Based on cloud computing, scientists use data from any organization to analyze its patterns and insights, and to find correlations to predict future crises, and help data analysis support and decision-making (Attiya & Zhang, 2017). By providing higher processing power and sophisticated tools, cloud services make it possible for mining large amounts of data. Such key benefits has brought to organizations and business and enables better decision making. Other benefit also includes productivity. A particularly typical example of cloud computing is the office tool like Microsoft Office 365 and Google Docs that enable individuals to complete tasks in the most productive way on the Internet. There is no limitation for work place and time of customers, and they can process word documents, PowerPoint or excel anytime and anywhere. To store the data in the cloud, users will not concern losing files or data loss or theft. In addition, cloud devices also help to share documents, and different people can work on a document at the same time on their own devices. Social media is quite popular in the current society, but it is the most overlooked application of cloud computing. Facebook, Twitter and other social applications can all use the cloud computing function well. So this is also very efficient and helpful for personal social aspects. Regardless of convenience, money saving, efficiency, analysis, social networking and so on, cloud computing has helped organizations, businesses and individuals to complete tasks more efficiently. The progress of the company and the convenience of individuals have a lot of benefits. Similarly, this is also very helpful for economic development.
While Others are Losing Out
However, some people cannot enjoy the benefits of cloud computing, because cloud computing is based on the internet and devices. There is no network somewhere in the world, so these functions are not available for them. It is shown in the statistics that the internet usage in the developing and underdeveloped world are much lesser as compared to the rest. This means that many are losing out in the usage of cloud computing.
How it Changed my Life
Cloud computing have transformed the way I study and work, despite having various advantages, it still do pose various problems to me as well. During the covid-19 period, no one can meet each other or go to university. But because of cloud computing, I can study at home, do homework at home and watch clips from university. Take canvas as an example, all of stuff put all the information student needs into canvas and student can check it at any time any place. Because of cloud computing such as Google drive, I can do group assignment together in different places at the same time. I do my film proposal last few weeks. I just use zoom to talk to my group member and use Google Docs to write any ideas and thoughts and also could leave any messages in the document for them to check then divide our part to do.
After that, we put own final work into Google Docs and modify together. In addition to studying, the state of work has also changed. Cloud computing not only makes it possible to work at home, but it is even profitable for some companies. Employees who work remotely can often improve their work efficiency and are willing to extend their working hours because they can benefit from working at home which makes them have great flexibility in time. During the holidays, I became a part-time employee of a company, but working at home is very convenient and easy.
Vulnerability and Breaches
However, this technology still has a lot of problems. The first problem is vulnerability and is easy to get attack. In cloud computing, every part is online, which also exposes potential risk. Even the best teams will suffer serious attacks and security breaches from time to time. The second issue is security and privacy. The best security standards and industry certification are provided by cloud service providers，but it is also risky to store data and files on external service.
Cloud computing is a new form of technology which became popular with the rise of the internet. This allowed for easy management and access of information through online platforms. This also means that information can be accessed anywhere anytime online. It has been transformative and part of the information historical trends. Cloud computing has been part of the change and offered various economics and social benefits which allowed for greater society advancement.
